ADMIN: New monthly rec post - and a Fest reminder!
Remember: The March 2010 Jack/Doctor Fest ends on March 31 - there's tons of time and tons of prompts, so come and play!
And while we're waiting, it's time to put out a call to all the reccers out there!
Most months it gets a little quiet in here round about the 15th of the month - and while nature might abhor a vacuum, Jack Harkness abhors a party where nothing's happening. And if Jack's disappointed, the Doctor's going to want to know why. So we thought perhaps we'd experiment with a mid-month rec post - there's so much excellent Jack/Doctor out there, and I, for one, know I've barely managed the tip of the iceberg.
We don't want to make this complicated - we'd just like to see if there are folks who'd like to sign up for a month in which they'd rec somewhere between five and ten fanworks to the comm at large. If you'd be interested, please leave a comment with your name and an email address at which we can contact you.
To kick things off, have a few recs - some of my favorite fics from our inaugural fest back in 2007.
Time and Eternity, by
dippy_hippy: I am a sucker for the tightness of a drabble - or ficlet, for the word-count stringent. :D Authors achieve some really lovely things when they're striving for economy, and this trio of ficlets, all elegantly hinged on a snippet of philosophy, is a great example.
dippy_hippy captures the Doctor, Jack, and the Doctor/Jack in a very small amount of space.
Polestar, by
dameruth: I freely and joyfully admit that
dameruth's Whodom OT3 is something I'm always delighted to see cross my flist - and her Doctor/Jack is just as well-executed. The Jack of this fic is a little bruised, a little jaded, and a little frustrated. The Doctor here is raw and edgy. And somehow, despite all the sharp angles and edges, this fic has lovely moments of peace and comfort and healing. The titular polestar works so well in fact and in analogy - the discussion Jack and the Doctor have about it marks the shift in the fic softly and quietly, without fanfare or histrionics, and is just all the more poignant for it.
Missing in Action, by
laurab1: Another short and lovely piece, this one by
laurab1 that captures another piece of the relationship between the Doctor and Jack that is so unique to the pair: their total affection and technogeeky love for the TARDIS. We know so little of Jack's Year That Never Was, but it makes so much sense to me that the TARDIS, red and wounded and crying out, would be something that stuck in Jack's mind just as much as it did in the Doctor's. We get such a clear sense of that affection, and that heartbreak, and how it ties in to all Jack's worry over the Doctor in this fic - it's why I keep coming back to it.
Lifeline, by
trobadora: Pardon me while I indulge myself and fangirl my co-mod.
trobadora is the one who sucked me into opened my eyes to the many, many possibilities of Doctor/Jack, and this fic is an excellent example of just how she did it. She gets so far into the Doctor's head, spinning out his grief and distress until you really do get the sense that Jack is the one thread he has left - and that Jack's a little frayed himself. This is h/c in the best way - everybody a little hurt, everybody offering a little comfort, fumbling quietly and carefully back to something like normal, with a room for a little of the dry wisecracking and careful commentary that makes this pairing so much fun to read and write.
In Time, by
jadesfire2808: I have to admit, writing dialogue is just really tough for me.
jadesfire2808's fic has such a marvelously quick back-and-forth to it, especially in the beginning, that it sucked me in completely. I can just hear the Doctor and Jack bantering back and forth. But this ficlet is so much more than that - it's a gorgeous moment between the two of them as they accept their differences and start looking in the same direction - that the whole thing is just a real pleasure to read.
Clarity, by
smithy161 The first time I read this, it was the sly humor in it that pulled me in and kept me reading -
smithy161 nails the wry enthusiasm that seems to go hand in glove with the Doctor and Jack - all the more so where there's slash in the equation. But it's also just lovely prose - the last line of the fic is just entirely perfect. The whole thing starts off silly and leaves you peaceful and a little sad. Just like the Doctor in the fic, you're left wondering exactly how it happened and very glad that it did - which is no easy trick for an author to pull off.
I hope you enjoy - and enjoy our newest round of fic as it emerges from this month's Fest! If you'd like to offer up recs for one month, we'd love to have you - just leave a comment to this post with your name and email. We hope you'll join in - there's so many of us out there, I can't wait to find out who I've been missing all this time!
