REC POST: June

Hi there! I'm [livejournal.com profile] trobadora and I'll be your reccer for this month. As quite a few of you probably know, Utopia was my Doctor/Jack point of no return - that episode was when I fell, finally and irrevocably, for the pairing. Especially this scene:

Jack: "How long have you known?"

Doctor: "Ever since I ran away from you." (...)

Jack: "In the end, I got the message. I'm the man who can never die. And all that time you knew."

Doctor: "That's why I left you behind. It's not easy, even just ... looking at you, Jack, 'cause you're wrong."

Jack: "Thanks."

Doctor: "You are, I can't help it. I'm a Time Lord. It's instinct. It's in my guts. You're a fixed point in time and space. You're a fact. That's never meant to happen. Even the TARDIS reacted against you - tried to shake you off. Flew all the way to the end of the universe just to get rid of you."

Jack: "So what you're saying is that you're ... prejudiced?"

Doctor: "I never thought of it like that."

And since it's mid-June and therefore almost exactly three years since Utopia first aired, I thought I'd rec some fic relating to that. :) Here we go:

  • Home by [livejournal.com profile] becky_h (Jack/Five) [PG-13]

Jack runs across the fifth Doctor, and in the process gets an unexpected answer to what a "fixed point" might truly mean to the Doctor. This is very short, but very poignant.

  • But Not Today by [livejournal.com profile] lostfrontier (Jack/Doctor) [PG]
Summary: Is it better to have loved and lost?

This is futurefic, and sort of a role reversal, and not a happy ending, but it's so very them - both of them. I can believe in this - it's incredibly real.

  • Departures by [livejournal.com profile] wojelah (Jack/Ten) [R]
Summary: Jack makes a promise to Martha, after everything. There's something the Doctor needs to understand. It's something Jack clings to.

This is set immediately post-Last of the Time Lords, a lovely scene that forces the Doctor to confront what has changed between them, and what You are not alone really means.

  • The Thing About Facts (1/2, 2/2) by [livejournal.com profile] wendymr (Jack/Ten) [PG-13]
Summary: That's the thing about facts. They're always there. Always fixed. Never changing.

Like the previous fic, this is set immediately post-Last of the Time Lords. There are some uncomfortable truths spoken, and the Doctor buys a clue. (In other words, my favourite kind of fic. *g*) It makes me hurt for both of them in all the right ways.

  • Linchpin by [livejournal.com profile] dameruth (Jack/Ten) [R]
Summary: What does the Doctor see, when he looks at Jack? Perceptions can change, in more ways than one.

This absolutely stunning - the most beautiful look at Jack's "wrongness" I've ever seen.

I hope you enjoy - and remember, if you'd like to offer up recs for one month, we'd love to have you. Just leave a comment to this post with your name and email. We hope you'll join in!

Thank you for the rec! And, yes, that episode, and that precise scene, is when I started shipping Ten/Jack like crazy. Shortly after the episode ended, I wrote a post-ep smutfic because the way they were looking at each other in our icon demanded it.

Yes, yes I loved that moment in Utopia! Looking forward to these fics - thanks! :D
