mynxii: Sharing Light (Jack/Ten) [G] (SUMMER HOLIDAYS, PROMPT 10)
Title: Sharing Light
Author: Transcendancing (
mynxii)
Pairing: Jack/Ten
Rating: G
Spoilers/warnings: nil
Challenge: Summer Holidays
Prompt group: 10: light - stars - luminous - obscure
Summary: Something of a date in the doorway of the TARDIS.
**
Light. It flickers out over the galaxy, each star’s tiny voice resonating inside his mind. Nights like this, he likes to be close to that flickering, those minute conversations across the depth and breadth of space. Mostly the voices of stars simmer like a low level luminescence in his mind, quiet yet visible. There are few that can hear their voices – the stars, but he can. There is a man beside him, tall and square jawed wearing a military-cut trench coat, he can hear the voices too. Smiling, the Doctor reaches out, taking the other man’s hand. “I’ve never been able to share this with anyone before. Once I wouldn’t have wanted to, wouldn’t have occurred to me... now... I’m glad you’re here, Jack.”
Jack smiles. “I thought I’d seen so much, being part of the Time Agency and such, and then the impossible happens and I’m standing here with you.” He squeezes the Doctor’s hand, shaking his head gently as he gazes out upon the field of stars. “I’m finding out just how many brand new discoveries I have before me. I can’t quite wrap my head around that most days, but standing here right now, I can.” Jack is looking into his eyes, and he knows that Jack can see that he’s had this realisation before - a hundred thousand times before. He can see his lover’s mind reel for a moment. So new to infinity, and still unused to this new context of time that’s altogether squishier than most humans would like to believe. The Doctor smiles again as Jack leans closer to him, enjoying the warmth of the other man as they stand together gently breathing in time.
The obscurity of the moment is not lost upon the two men. Something of a spontaneous date, in the doorway of the TARDIS overlooking a nursery of stars as far as their eyes can see. Holding hands and leaning into one another, the mood is subtle, a gentle hum between them, not unlike the humming conversation of the stars before them. They stand quietly for some time, yet as all moments do, it passes and they move; Jack cups the Doctor’s cheek in his hands and kisses him. It is a sweet kiss, and no matter how many times they do this the Doctor still finds his mind stilling, and Jack’s presence swelling to fill his awareness, all the myriad of side tangents and conversations, calculations and wondering possibilities running through his head at any given moment ceasing. When Jack kisses him, there is only the two of them.
He returns Jack’s kiss, subtlety falls away and the kiss becomes hungry. Time passes, and neither of them is sure how much – Time Lord or no – before they come up for air, blinking in the luminous glow of the stars around them, shadowed only by the TARDIS hanging in space. They lean into one another, needing to be close, turning their heads to gaze upon the stars once more. Their breathing begins to synchronise, and as Jack nuzzles his neck, the Doctor moves further back into the TARDIS, pulling at Jack’s hand. “Let’s you and me make our own stars, shall we?”
