CHALLENGE: Power Trip
All right, so we tried leaving it to luck, and look how well that went. (Which is to say, spectacularly.) But now it's time to take charge, to grab the reins, to take control.
It's time for The Power Challenge.
The man who's beaten death and a lord of time - they're not just lucky sods. They're men of strange and dangerous power, and I haven't even begun to discuss the strength of 51st century pheromones yet. They make plans, they change lives, they span centuries: they are rare creatures indeed.
And sometimes they're terrifyingly helpless.
So for a month (ish, and it would fit the challenge if I blamed my inability to close last month on time to circumstances beyond my control, for which many apologies), we're placing Jack and the Doctor in your power. Are they gods? Are they pawns? Are they all of the above and something in between? When is too much power a bad thing? How do you recover from feeling like the world is utterly out of your control? When is it safe to turn over control to someone you trust? When is it cathartic to simply have it stripped away?
Regardless, one thing is sure: the power play between the two of them will -never- be boring.
As a gentle reminder, please don't crosspost stories for this challenge to other comms until the challenge closes. (Which, as usual, will be about one month from now.) And don't forget - leave a comment in THIS post and tell us what you think the next challenge should be!
Until then, have at it: the Doctor and Jack await, and they're entirely at your disposal....
Power's a heady thing, isn't it?

I feel I should suggest another. How about... Change? Jack and the Doctor seem to be stuck never-changing, but for anything to happen between them things would have to change. And how would they cope with a change to what they're used to? How does Jack feel about the Doctor's change of body? How does the Doctor feel about Jack being essentially unchanging?

Umm...I'd still like the AU challenge for fixing episodes/meeting in different situations/out of context fic, but I'd also like to spam you with a few other ideas...sorry!
Life and Death (since they're big themes in the DW universe)
History (Jack and the Doctor both have twisting, painful pasts and have lived a long time...or simply about time travel)
Mistakes (from little ones like leaving the TARDIS kettle on to dooming an entire world...or forgetting your boyfriend's birthday...)
Memory (What are Jack's missing memories? How would amnesia affect their relationship? What are the good times/bad times they remember?)

Pride
I was rewatching VotD not too long ago, and I *finally* made out what the Doctor shouts when he kicks the broken teleport: "I can do anything!" So...Jack and the Doctor both know they have abilities that outstrip those of most everyone around them. But that knowledge often leads to overconfidence. How many times have they both been so certain they can handle a situation, only to find things spiraling even further out of control? Or made choices for others because they believe they know best, only to watch that person's trust fall apart? How might pride come between them? (I'm in angst mode right now, but I'm certain there's a lighter angle to this one, too--games of one-upsmanship?)
Love
I was talking to an off-LJ friend of mine earlier today, and she said that she thinks Jack confuses friendship with love. (I disagree...but it got me thinking...) How do Jack and the Doctor understand love? (And/or friendship? And/or commitment?) How do their long lives and the times/places where they came of age affect the way they understand their relationships? (With each other? With others?) What might it mean for them to make a commitment to each other? (Could either of them do that?)

I hope this wasn't too confusing...

I'm not being funny, but I worked my arse off to get a 50 page fic out in time for this challenge. Why should I bother if it's only going to be put off until whenever everyone's finished?
That probably sounds a little harsh, but I worked so hard to get it done on time, just for the deadline to be put off with no mention.
Um, also? We'll definitely give it some thought. Why not just do it? I think it's a brilliant compromise and I'm sure other people agree.
Not that I want to tell you how to run the comm (yeah, I know, I blatantly do) but I just feel like I busted my hump writing an essay just for the tutor to turn around and say 'well the rest of the class isn't finished yet, so just hand it in whenever'.

And I didn't say we're definitely going to do it because there are two mods, and one of us can't just decide this without having talked to the other, no matter how good the suggestion is.
