CHALLENGE: Power Trip

All right, so we tried leaving it to luck, and look how well that went. (Which is to say, spectacularly.) But now it's time to take charge, to grab the reins, to take control.

It's time for The Power Challenge.

The man who's beaten death and a lord of time - they're not just lucky sods. They're men of strange and dangerous power, and I haven't even begun to discuss the strength of 51st century pheromones yet. They make plans, they change lives, they span centuries: they are rare creatures indeed.

And sometimes they're terrifyingly helpless.

So for a month (ish, and it would fit the challenge if I blamed my inability to close last month on time to circumstances beyond my control, for which many apologies), we're placing Jack and the Doctor in your power. Are they gods? Are they pawns? Are they all of the above and something in between? When is too much power a bad thing? How do you recover from feeling like the world is utterly out of your control? When is it safe to turn over control to someone you trust? When is it cathartic to simply have it stripped away?

Regardless, one thing is sure: the power play between the two of them will -never- be boring.

As a gentle reminder, please don't crosspost stories for this challenge to other comms until the challenge closes. (Which, as usual, will be about one month from now.) And don't forget - leave a comment in THIS post and tell us what you think the next challenge should be!

Until then, have at it: the Doctor and Jack await, and they're entirely at your disposal....

Power's a heady thing, isn't it?

Fix the episode Exit Wounds have the doctor find Jack before he is buried for 2000 years. Or have them talk after the 2000 years about his brother or all the things going bad for JAck

SQUEE! MY CHALLENGE!! *is tremendously excited*

I feel I should suggest another. How about... Change? Jack and the Doctor seem to be stuck never-changing, but for anything to happen between them things would have to change. And how would they cope with a change to what they're used to? How does Jack feel about the Doctor's change of body? How does the Doctor feel about Jack being essentially unchanging?

This prompt by sarkywoman? ^ Pure gold!

Umm...I'd still like the AU challenge for fixing episodes/meeting in different situations/out of context fic, but I'd also like to spam you with a few other ideas...sorry!

Life and Death (since they're big themes in the DW universe)
History (Jack and the Doctor both have twisting, painful pasts and have lived a long time...or simply about time travel)
Mistakes (from little ones like leaving the TARDIS kettle on to dooming an entire world...or forgetting your boyfriend's birthday...)
Memory (What are Jack's missing memories? How would amnesia affect their relationship? What are the good times/bad times they remember?)

I got a couple too:

Pride
I was rewatching VotD not too long ago, and I *finally* made out what the Doctor shouts when he kicks the broken teleport: "I can do anything!" So...Jack and the Doctor both know they have abilities that outstrip those of most everyone around them. But that knowledge often leads to overconfidence. How many times have they both been so certain they can handle a situation, only to find things spiraling even further out of control? Or made choices for others because they believe they know best, only to watch that person's trust fall apart? How might pride come between them? (I'm in angst mode right now, but I'm certain there's a lighter angle to this one, too--games of one-upsmanship?)

Love
I was talking to an off-LJ friend of mine earlier today, and she said that she thinks Jack confuses friendship with love. (I disagree...but it got me thinking...) How do Jack and the Doctor understand love? (And/or friendship? And/or commitment?) How do their long lives and the times/places where they came of age affect the way they understand their relationships? (With each other? With others?) What might it mean for them to make a commitment to each other? (Could either of them do that?)

Just to let you know, I'm using the prompt pride in my Jack/Ianto challenge community lovingthecoat and your idea here helped me to write the challenge prompt - so thank you!

Plagiarist Author

[identity profile] lonie.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hello, I'm writing to inform the Mods of this community that one of the authors who has submitted written works to this community has been found to be a plagiarist. The majority of the stories this author has claimed to have written were originally fics written for the Stargate fandom by other authors.

For a steady growing list of the fics that this author has plagiarized (and the original fics and authors) please visit:

http://community.livejournal.com/stop_plagiarism/56125.html

If by chance any of the works submitted to the wintercompanion website by this particular author is among the listing of plagiarised fics, we in the Stargate community ask that the mods please remove those fics from this website at your earliest convenience.

We thank you in advance for your time and possible assistance.

Sincerely,

Lonie
A concerned fellow fanfic writer

You're more than welcomed. And Thank You so very much for your quick reply. And to think, I was just making my way down the list of stories posted here (as I'm a huge Dr. Who/Torchwood fan as well) when the alarm was raised in the Stargate community. Dag nabbit. I think I made it a quarter of the way down. LOL!

Thanks again and take care.

Hi there! We opened the last challenge a bit late, and we want to leave it open for at least one full month. (Also, I'm still working on my own entry, which is giving me trouble. *sighs*) But the next challenge will definitely arrive on the weekend. :-)

[identity profile] vail-kagami.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe there could be a way to get the challenges back to starting at the beginning of the month and not in the middle. Like, you could post the toppic of a new challenge on the first but close the old one only when there was a full month to write for it. The new one would not really be opened before the old one is closed, i.e. we can't post our stories, but we can at least start writing them and have a full month before the challenge is closed on the fisrt day of the next month.
I hope this wasn't too confusing...

That's a good suggestion! We'll definitely give it some thought and try to get back to a more regular schedule soon. :-)

Also, I'm still working on my own entry, which is giving me trouble

I'm not being funny, but I worked my arse off to get a 50 page fic out in time for this challenge. Why should I bother if it's only going to be put off until whenever everyone's finished?

That probably sounds a little harsh, but I worked so hard to get it done on time, just for the deadline to be put off with no mention.

Um, also? We'll definitely give it some thought. Why not just do it? I think it's a brilliant compromise and I'm sure other people agree.

Not that I want to tell you how to run the comm (yeah, I know, I blatantly do) but I just feel like I busted my hump writing an essay just for the tutor to turn around and say 'well the rest of the class isn't finished yet, so just hand it in whenever'.

Sorry - that was meant as a joke. I actually started the fic for a previous challenge and continued writing it for this one - it has nothing to do with when the challenge posts are made. The reason we haven't put up a new challenge yet is as I said - we wanted the current one to run for a full month.

And I didn't say we're definitely going to do it because there are two mods, and one of us can't just decide this without having talked to the other, no matter how good the suggestion is.

[identity profile] sarkywoman.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
But if each challenge starts when the last one ends, some time mid-month, isn't that a bit awkward for everyone?

Well, it's how all the flashfic comms I'm familiar with work. But I can see what you mean, and as I said, I'm going to talk to my co-mod about it. Please have some patience.
