Once there was a lonely Merman named Jack. He was well past the age that most of his friends had married and he envied them just a little. He had dated some, but he had never found a mermaid or merman that he fancied. He wasn’t sure what to do with his life, but he had no desire to continue working on his father’s seaweed farm.

What he really wanted he kept a close secret because he knew he could never have it.

For as long as he could remember, he had looked up to the surface with want. He would often follow the large wooden ships that skimmed the surface of the ocean going off to faraway places. When they stopped at a cove or beach Jack would haul himself up on a rock and watch the humans as they walked across the deck of the ships.

Oh, to be able to walk… on real legs! To run along the beach as he had seen the humans do, that was what he really wanted.

Jack would spend hours listening to the humans talk to each other. Their voices were so sharp and crisp, so exact in their meaning. It sounded so exotic. Jack loved the way his throat vibrated when he imitated the words he had heard. Over the years he had gotten pretty good at speaking their language. Or at least he thought he had. He couldn’t be sure without someone to speak to.

Some nights the men on the ships would drink a potion they called "rum." Jack though it must have so magical properties in it as the humans would dance and sing so happily after drinking it. Jack loved listening to their songs and then practice them later when he was alone.

One afternoon Jack was following a ship the men called TARDIS as it pulled into a small cove. It let out its heavy metal sculpture that most ships carried at the back. Jack had learned that it was called an anchor and was used to keep the ship from floating away. He got excited, as he was sure this meant the humans were going to drink their magic potion and start singing.

Jack swam closer so he could listen and that’s when he first laid eyes on the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.

The human looked so sad as he stared out to sea and Jack's heart went out to him. The human, called John by his shipmates, began to drink the rum and Jack was glad. He was sure that John would soon feel better. However, there had to have been something wrong with the magic in John's potion, because he just looked sadder.

An hour later John separated from the group, went to the back of the ship, and jumped off into the water. At first Jack thought maybe the human just wanted to swim. He loved to go for long swims when he was feeling down. It usually helped to clear his mind and made him feel better.

It was soon clear that swimming wasn't John's goal as he sank quickly to the bottom of the cove. Jack knew that humans couldn't breathe water like he could. John would die if Jack didn't save him.

He dove down to the bottom, gathered the man in his arms, and swam him to shore. He pulled John as far up on the beach as he could, then began to slap his back to get the water out of his lungs. The human began to gasp and cough, then curse.

Jack was so glad his people could breathe air for a few hours at a time so he could stay and help John.

"Are you alright, John?" Jack asked from where he lay behind the human.

"You shouldn't have saved me," John stated without emotion or movement. "I didn't want to be saved."

"I'm sorry. I was just trying to help." Jack couldn't understand why someone so radiant would want to die.

"Well I never asked you for help," the strange man spat back angrily. John quickly sat up and twisted around to look at Jack. "Who are you anyway? And how did you know my name? You're not off my ship."

"My name is Jack," he replied as he slapped his tail on the sand nervously. The human's eyes followed the movement then got very wide in shock. John scrambled backwards on the sand in an effort to get away from Jack.

"Don't worry," Jack assured. "I would never harm you."

"You're a… you're a… Mermaid?"

"Merman actually."

"How is that… how could?" John's face was very pale.

"I saw you jump off your ship and sink, and I thought, 'Someone so beautiful shouldn't die.' So I saved you."

"You think I'm beautiful?" The man's face turned from pale to flushed and his breathing increased. Jack wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.

"How could I not. You are beautiful." Jack smiled.

"But you're a man, or at least male." John looked him over from head to fin. "You are male, right?"

"Of course I am!" Jack sat up curling his tail behind him. "What a silly question."

"Well, a male shouldn't tell another male that he's beautiful," John explained. "People might think you harbor un-natural feelings toward me."

"What is un-natural about giving someone a compliment? And what does my gender have to do with it?" Jack was at a loss to understand.

"Because people might think that you're attracted to me… sexually."

"But I am attracted to you," Jack stated plainly. "And if by un-natural you mean because you're human… Well, I don't mind as long as you don’t mind me being a Merman."

"It's the man part my people object to," John clarified.

"Are you saying that in your world human males aren't allowed to love each other?" Jack asked disbelievingly.

"Of course they're not!" John shouted. "It's against the laws of God and man."

Jack just stared at the human for a moment then he began to laugh. And each time he took a breath he seemed to laugh harder.

"That is… (snort) the stupidest… (gasp) thing I… (holding his sides) have ever heard!" Jack's laughter must have been affecting John as he began to smile then laugh along.

When they were both able to breathe normally again Jack asked, "How could anyone hope to enforce such a ridiculous law?"

John sobered quickly, then looked sadly out at his ship. "The penalty for loving a man is death. If my shipmates knew I was…" John looked over at Jack, blushed, then looked away again. "Well, they'd kill me. It's why I jumped. I couldn't live the lie anymore."

"The Mer-people believe you can't control who you fall in love with, male or female."

John smile then shook his head.

"What?" Jack asked.

"It's just that I can't believe I'm talking to a merman." John moved closer, reached his hand over, and stroked Jack's face with his fingertips. "Are you sure I'm not dead and by some accident I ended up in Heaven?"

Rather than answering, Jack put his hand behind John's neck and pulled him in. As their lips touched he was struck by how warm humans were.

~`~

Over the next few months Jack came to see John any time his ship was within swimming distance. They would slip away and spend as much time as they could together. Being together was wonderful, but far from perfect.

They hugged, kissed, and rubbed against each other, but it was never quite right. They just weren't physically compatible, but they tried to make do.

One afternoon Jack was waiting on one of their favorite beaches when John walked up looking upset and oh so sad. He stopped several feet from Jack and stared longingly.

"What? What has happened?" Jack knew it couldn't be good. When he spoke John's voice was rough as if it was hard for him to get the words out.

"My ship just got orders. We sail for the New World in a few days." John looked down at his shoes and tried to clear his throat. "We'll be gone for a long, long time. I may not ever come back and it's much too far for you to swim."

"What are you saying?" Though Jack was sure he knew exactly what John was trying to say.

"I'm saying we can't see each other anymore." John wouldn't look at him, but Jack could see water coming from his eyes. Tears, John had called them. Humans secreted them when they were sad. Jack wished he could cry. Maybe it would make his heart hurt less.

"I just came to say goodbye." John turned around and began to stride away.

"I love you," Jack shouted. John stopped, but didn't turn around.

"I love you, too," he whispered back. "Enough to let you go." With that John ran very fast away from him.

He waited until his love was too far away to see before throwing himself back into the ocean. Jack swam and swam until he was too tired to move. He lay curled up on the sandy ocean floor, hugging his tail, and trying to think of some way to fix this. There had to be something he could do.

It came to him in a flash… The Sea Witch! It was said she could grant wishes if she felt you were worthy. She lived in the deep ocean and was said to be the ugliest and scariest creature in all the oceans.

~`~

It took more than a day to get to the Sea Witch's lair. Jack called out to her and a few minutes later he knew the stories about her were true.

"Who calls to me?"

"I do." He swallowed his fear and moved closer. "My name is Jack and I need to ask you for a favor."

"Of course you do. No one ever comes to visit me just to keep me company." The witch sighed and sat down on the sand. "So what do you want badly enough to swim all this way."

Jack went into detail about all that had happened to him, his love for John and that he was leaving. "So I've come to ask you to give me legs so I can be with the one I love."

The Sea Witch stared at the distraught merman for some time making Jack squirm a bit at her close scrutiny.

"In order to obtain what you really want, you must give up what you've wanted the longest." The Witch started to turn around to leave.

"Wait," Jack shouted making the witch turn around. "If I give up what I've wanted the longest, which is legs, I can't be with John." 'This Witch is crazy,' Jack thought.

"I repeat, In order to obtain what you really want, you must give up what you've wanted the longest." The witch turned back around and shouted over her shoulder. "Leave now and don't come back unless it's for a social visit."

"Fine! Be that way!" Jack shouted sarcastically and swam off. He didn't see the Sea Witch smile.

~`~

Jack swam all night trying to get back, resting only when his arms and tail were too tired to move. He needed to see his love one more time before he was gone forever. Unfortunately, he was too late. John's ship was already gone.

Jack hauled himself up onto a large boulder on the beach. He stretched out and closed his eyes. He planned to lie there until he dried out and died. Nothing mattered anymore. He smile as he daydreamed about his lost love.

Suddenly, cool sea water was splashed onto his stomach. Jack jerk upright startled.

"What the..." He searched frantically in all directions trying to see where the water had come from. There in the shallow waves he saw what he never thought he'd see again.

"John!"

"Hello, Jack." John smiled at him, but wasn't coming out of the water so Jack jumped in. That's when he noticed his beloved human had a large green tail.

"How?"

"I have no idea," John put his hand behind his head and rubbed his neck. "I felt so hot, as if I had caught fire, so I jumped in the water to cool off. Next thing I knew I could breathe water and had a tail."

"Well, your tail is as beautiful as you are," Jack confirmed. 'I'll have to thank the Sea Witch,' he thought.

As the sun set, the two became lovers in every way. Then they set off, first to thank the Sea Witch, and then to begin their journey into their future life together.

When the sea is calm and the moon is full and bright on the water, the big ships take anchor. The sailors take a welcome rest from their day of hard work. They drink their rum, and sing their songs. They would retell stories of traveling the seas; of fish tales, and whoppers, and maybe a truth or two.

It's said that sometimes a sailor would spot what appeared to be two handsome young men in the sea. They would swim so easily in the moonlit water as if the sea, not land, was their home. The sailors would all come to watch the handsome swimmers embrace, and kiss, and swim, and play, and dive through the mirror-smooth surface into the azure depths, their bodies and tails reflecting back the glints of moonlight like a million brilliant jewels. Then the sailors would pour another round of drinks and add another stanza to their fish tales.

What a lovely story, you have surpassed yourself with this. You have taken an old fairytale and made it yours and its illustrated! My favorite line comes from the sea witch who says 'what do you want? No one comes for just a social visit.' I always look forward to your work and you haven't disappointed me yet!

Wow, thank you so much. Your comment has made my day.

I'm so pleased you like my sea witch. I wanted to turn the whole story of "The Little Mermaid" around. I figure that everyone makes her out to be evil, but maybe she's just lonely. Being judge solely by her looks.

This was really sweet and a really nice retelling of the story,
