Jack looked around the Flying Rickshaw, tablet in hand checking off the amenities the doctor had ordered for his bride. For some reason Rose had wanted to have their nuptials in a recording studio and the doctor had chosen The Flying Rickshaw for it, a combination spaceship, and recording studio.
Rose, finding her had been so unexpected and so good for the Timelord.
At first things were just as it was before, when he had still been with them, but gradually that had changed. At first he had been happy for them, hadn’t felt left out he didn’t want to intrude on new love. Now he wasn’t so sure about his place with them anymore. More and more often, he felt like an intruder when they were together.
They spoke in half sentences or laughed at things with one another that he knew nothing about. They went off together or sat at a table for two in crowded places they walked hand in hand while he followed behind alone, and silent they rarely looked at him when together or spoke to him.
Rose was different she did not seem to have room in her heart for him anymore; she interrupted every conversation he was having with the doctor, that is when he managed to find him alone. She sat between them or pulled the doctor away whenever possible even when they were working on the TARDIS. Jack got the hint and left them alone as much as possible.
However, being alone with only Sexy for company had an unexpected benefit. She had formed a small bond with him, nothing like what she had with the Doctor of course, more like that of a mother tiger and her newborn kitten. Now they easily conversed mind to mind and she too was not as lonely as she had been with her thief always so busy with his pink and yellow girl.
Jack felt a gentle nudge in his mind Sexy was reminding him of the time; he needed to finish with the preparations and leave. The ceremony was private between the Doctor and Rose Tyler. He glanced once more around the space and made sure he had not forgotten anything then departed he did not want to be late for lunch the TARDIS, had a surprise for him.
Arriving back at the blue police box, he hurriedly washed up and changed into a clean shirt and worn jeans and went into the second room in his suite to see what she had prepared for him. To his surprise, it was a formal dinner, laid out with crystal, china, and silver. He was underdressed he felt a brief tingle sweep over his body.
Glancing down at himself, he was startled to realize his clothing had changed, he was no longer dressed in his casual clothes but clad in a dark formal suit that appeared to emulate the majesty of dark matter and his shirt was as white a dwarf star blinding in its purity. Everything fit him like the preverbal glove. He knew without looking that she had combed his tousled locks into the same perfection.
Looking at the splendor around him even the room was different; they appeared to be dining in outer space lit only by the bright stars in an unfamiliar constellation. Sitting down in the chair that was just the right distance away from the table he slid into a chair that was so comfortable he wanted nothing more than to sit here forever.
He lifted the cover from the dish in front of him and felt tears prickle in his eyes it held rare and expensive delicacies from his home on Boeshane, each one prepared as if a loving mother celebrated her son’s coming of age. He lifted the first delicate pastry and savored each mouthful eating every bite with tears shining in his eyes until his plate was empty and the equally rare wine was gone.
After dinner, the TARDIS nudged the sleepy man, her child to his bed watching over him until he safely ensconced in his bed just before he closed his eyes he blew a kiss into the air and whispered.
“Goodnight Mother, I love you too!”
He felt a soft touch like the briefest kiss, and fell asleep wrapped in her arms.
Epilogue
The next morning after the ceremony, the bonded couple returned to the TARDIS, each of them happy in their love and looked for their friend Jack, feeling a bit guilty about their earlier actions they had not really meant to shut him out, they had halfway expected to find him gone or sulking. To their surprise though he was nowhere in sight he was not gone. When the doctor asked the TARDIS where he had gotten too she answered he was in his rooms sleeping.
“Let’s wake him up we can have breakfast together and take him with us to that pleasure planet he is always talking about. Oh, don’t look at me like that Doctor! You know Jack; he’ll find some beautiful being or four and never notice we aren’t there!”
The Timelord chuckled kissed her on the head and they set off for Jack’s room, entering it they looked around.
“Doctor it’s so different…-“
“Changed, it’s almost like a –“No it couldn’t be.
“What did you do Sexy,” he whispered.
“What did you do to him now-“
*I was lonely,* she told him and so was he, now neither of us are.*
He felt a gentle push toward the door, grabbing Rose’s hand he pulled her out leaving the TARDIS and her child alone.
*When you return we will be waiting, do not worry he will sleep for a little while longer he will not miss you I will be here. Go and get to know your mate.*
He felt her attention turn from him. Looking at his mate his human mate-, he began to wonder about what he had not seen in the flirty man that his ship had. Well enough of that Rose would ask questions he could not answer if he let her, questions he did not have any answers too, questions he did not want to think about yet. Therefore, he distracted her, and himself.
“You know Rose,” he said nibbling on her ear. “We never did take a spin in the Flying Rickshaw-“
“And I didn’t get to sing in its studio, like you promised-“
“Or listen to Jack playing the role of an old time radio broadcaster.” she continued giggling at him as he rolled his eyes.
“Don’t forget he also programmed the Tablet he left us with a list of things we had to do on our honeymoon- “
“What are we waiting for?” He asked her as they ran out of the old blue ship, laughing like children on a new adventure, Jack all but forgotten in their excitement. He would still be there when they returned they could concentrate on one another.
If they had listened they would have heard a haunting melody, one that the doctor might have remembered from long ago when his mother had hummed the tune to him, it was a lullaby.
