Summary: Jack never used to be afraid of the dark...
Jack never used to be afraid of the dark. Dark could be fun. The dark could lead to all sorts of interesting encounters.
This wasn't just darkness. This was more than that. He could see nothing not even the tiniest sliver of light.
He could hear though, voices coming at him from the darkness, whispers that he couldn't make out, sounds that came closer then moved away again. He couldn't run, couldn't hide from them, there was nothing he could do to escape the ghosts from his past life as they closed in on him mercilessly, taunting him, screaming for mercy, for help, for their mummy, for their lives...
And then he heard his voice. The one that made his stomach clench, fear washing through him as he tried to work out where it was coming from, to find the speaker before he faded away again. The voice was laughing at him, moving from his left to his right, behind him, in front of him... He reached out blindly but there was nothing there. Then it was whispering in his ear, all those things that he feared were true about himself, all those doubts and old nightmares coming back to him.... He wasn't good enough, didn't deserve this, should pay for the things he had done...
With a scream he sat bolt upright in the bed, breathing hard and unable to see, still lost in the dark as the nightmare clung on to him, refusing to leave until with a soft click light flooded through the room and the voices faded, disappearing back into the shadows like wraiths. A body moved in the light behind him, wrapping itself around him tenderly, arms gently stroking his chest as the shivers subsided.
"Bad dream?" Jack nodded slowly and leaned back tiredly, letting the younger man support him for a moment as he regained his strength, his armour slipping back into place in the low light even as the shadows mocked him still... "It's ok. Shhhhh." He let his lover comfort him gently even as his mind raced, trying not to still see the last face from his nightmare even as it blazed in front of his eyes.
It wasn't ok. It wouldn't be, not until he knew why.
Not until he found the right kind of Doctor again.
Maybe then he would at least stop dreaming of him every night.

At first I thought Jack was experiencing his version of death, but somehow that he was just sleeping is worse. I was really hoping the Doctor would be there when he woke up, although I suppose my disapointment was only a fraction of Jack's.
Anyway, lovely fic. I loved it!

I am playing with the idea of a companion piece from the Doctor's side so you never know.....
