After Jack is killed by Abaddon, Ten sneaks into the Torchwood morgue to take his body away, horrified by his treatment at the hands of the TW team.
Rating: PG-13

Summary: The Doctor doesn’t like the way Torchwood operates any more now than he did at their last meeting.

**********************

The Doctor crept into the Torchwood Hub, the sonic screwdriver getting him through locks and alarm systems that were advanced for Earth, but nothing to him, little more obstacle than a padlock.

Reaching the main floor of the hub, he looked around briefly to make sure there was no one in sight, raising his eyebrows slightly. He knew that under other circumstances, this cavernous space would have piqued his curiosity, it was so different from the clean, uncluttered lines of Torchwood One before the destruction.

He could see Jack’s hand in the chaos, if things weren’t orderly, then anyone who managed to get past the security wouldn’t be able to find anything.

His silent footsteps padded in the direction of the room the TARDIS had identified for him as the morgue, and when he got there, he paused, hearing a female voice with a welsh accent.

“You will forgive us, won’t you Jack? I know we kind of mutinied, murdered you, but it’s not as if you can really die, even if Owen didn’t know that. I just wanted Rhys alive again, he didn’t deserve to die that way, and Owen wanted Diane, that was what we were promised Jack. We deserved to get the ones we love back didn’t we? We really didn’t know that opening the Rift would release Abaddon, but you defeated him, didn’t you? And you will come back, no matter what the others say.”

The Doctor listened with rising bile and anger as he listened to her voice, trying to make excuses to a dead man. The TARDIS had seen the massive energy surge of the Rift opening, and he had arrived just in time to see Jack dying to defeat Abaddon, and close it again, but he didn’t know until now how that had come about. Peeping round the corner, he saw a dark haired woman leaning over Jack, stroking his body as she talked.

Moving cat like, working hard to make sure his rage didn’t make him careless, he moved up behind her, adjusting the settings on his screwdriver as he did so. Gwen finally realized there was someone behind her when she felt a warm breath on her ear.

“No one betrays what is mine.” The voice hissed, and before she could turn, something cold slid through her hair to rest on the back of her neck, and a jolt sent her crashing into the darkness.

The Doctor watched dispassionately as the woman slid off the stool and thudded to the floor. She wasn’t dead, he couldn’t bring himself to commit murder even if she did deserve it,  but he made no effort to straighten out her crumpled form, to make her more comfortable.

He dismissed her from his attention, focusing instead on the man lying on the slide of the open morgue drawer. Jack’s skin was cold under his fingers as he stroked lightly over one cheek, his skin a lifeless grey, broken only by the bruises  under his eyes.

“Oh Jack, I am so sorry. History be damned, I would never have left you on Earth if I had known they were going to betray you this way. I should have destroyed Torchwood before they got off the ground.” He hissed. He carded his fingers through dark hair, longer than he remembered from when he had last seen Jack, on the Game Station.

“Well no more.” The Doctor slid his arms under the body, picking the limp form up easily, and holding him cradled against his chest. Jack’s lolling head came to rest on his shoulder as the Doctor took his first steps out of the room.

He was almost back to the door he had come in through when another Welsh accented voice stopped him.

“Who are you, and what the hell do you think you are doing?”

Turning, the Doctor saw a man in a suit standing in the doorway of an office, judging by the clutter, the Doctor knew that office had to be Jack’s. The Welshman was good looking, young, sleep rumpled, and looked like he had been crying, but none of that made the gun in his hand any less steady where it aimed squarely at the Doctor.

“I’m taking him. He was betrayed by you lot, murdered, then had to sacrifice himself to stop the creature you lot released, and judging by what that woman in there was saying, all for selfish reasons.”

“Gwen? No, she and Owen did it for selfish reasons, Tosh and I, we were foolish, but we believed that it was the only way to stop the fractures, and save the Earth,” he said, slightly bitter, as he lowered the gun.

“You’re the Doctor, aren’t you?”

“Yes. And you are?”

“Ianto Jones. He’s been looking for you, waiting for you, for a very long time.”

“I know.”

“If you’re taking him, then there are things you should take too. Things that are his, things that he wouldn’t want to leave where they could get their hands on them.”

The Doctor looked down at the body in his arms.

“My primary concern is him.”

“I know. What did you do to Gwen?”

“The dark haired woman who was in there?”

“Yes.”

“Passed a small electrical current through her nervous system. She won’t wake up this side of morning.”

“Good, then you have time to take him to your ship, and then come back. I’ll start packing up his stuff, so it will be ready when you get back.”

“How do I know you aren’t going to call the rest of the team while I’m gone?”

“You have my word. I…. he didn’t deserve what we did to him, and he has been waiting a very long time.”

“You’re in love with him, aren’t you?”

“Maybe a little.” Ianto shrugged.

“All right, I’ll be back as fast as I can.”

They carried the last of the boxes to the TARDIS together, and the Doctor paused before he shut the door.

“You could come with us, for a while.” He offered.

“No, thanks. Someone has to stay here and keep the others in line. I’ll just demonstrate to Owen that I really was aiming for his shoulder the last time I shot him. Just, Jack will recover, won’t he?”

“Eventually, yes.”

“Then tell him, I am so glad he finally has what he was looking for.”

“I will, thank you Ianto.”

Ianto stood back and watched as the door closed, and moments later, the TARDIS vanished in a crescendo of noise that made Ianto wince, and wonder how that ship didn’t shake itself apart. Once all trace of it was gone, Ianto returned to the hub. He needed to wipe all the security footage, and make sure he could cover for allowing the Doctor to walk into the hub and walk out with Jack.

Jack woke up with a familiar sound in his ears, in his head. A warm weight against his side made him force his head to tilt to the side, and he grinned faintly. The Doctor was asleep against his side, an arm wrapped possessively around Jack. Jack managed the bring his hand up and close it around the Doctor’s arm, making him pop awake with a start.

“Jack, you’re awake, you’re alive.” He grinned.

“Where am I?” Jack asked, needing the confirmation.

“You’re home, Jack, you’re home.” The Doctor’s smile softened, and he leaned up and kissed Jack, sweetly, tenderly.

“Welcome home.” He murmured, before deepening the kiss, their tongues twining sinuously.

“No one betrays what is mine.”

I can so see that in the Doctor - leave him to fend for himself for over a hundred years, but insanely possessive all at the same time. :-)

*snerk* Had the funniest picture pop into my head right near the end when Jack wakes up...of him in Sleeping Beauty's dress and the Doctor in the prince's duds awakening Jack with a kiss. Sorry, I'm laying full blame for all the adverts I've been seeing for the new Disney princess stories dvd.

Lovely story. :)
