[livejournal.com profile] sarkywoman : Unforgivable (Ten/Jack) [PG]

Title: Unforgivable
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sarkywoman
Challenge: crossing the line
Rating: PG
Spoilers/warnings: Utopia, Sound of Drums, Last of the Time Lords.
Summary: Jack/Tenth Doctor angst drabble.
Notes: Does anyone else find all the essential pre-fic notes, tags, subject, etc to be very tiring? I thought I'd sorted it all out, only to realise I'd actually forgotten to put the fic with all this stuff.

The Doctor didn’t notice when he first crossed the line. With so many things happening, it was natural to overlook the minor occurrences.

If one could call it minor that Jack no longer loved him.

Oh, there was affection, of course there was. Jack didn’t dislike him, even after all he’d gone through at the Master’s cruel hands. The Doctor would go so far as to say that he was still Jack’s favourite person in the Universe. But how long would that last now that the love had gone? Now Jack was no longer blinded by his adoration, he would be able to see the Doctor for what he was, and assign him his large portion of blame.

It was probably for the best, even while it broke the Time Lord’s hearts to acknowledge that. Jack’s feelings had never brought him anything but pain and an inhuman existence. He said himself that his life would have been better had he never met the Doctor, and that was before all this trauma with the Master.

Still… it had been nice, having someone who loved him always. Even though they’d been worlds apart, the Doctor had always been able to feel Jack there at the edge of his consciousness. Almost like a Time Lord. A presence simultaneously disturbing and reassuring. Now that Jack no longer loved him, the reassuring element would fade because he would just become a Torchwood Agent with whom the Doctor had some awkward history, a man the Doctor had wronged one time too many.

Jack had forgiven everything. The Daleks, the immortality, the abandonment, even his multitude of deaths in the year on the Valiant. All the Doctor’s fault, all forgiven. But he was the Doctor, the great martyr, so of course he had to push that little bit harder, had to push Jack as far as he could because heaven forbid he have a single ray of light in his cold and lonely universe.

So he loved the Master, for all the good it did him. And at some point, Jack noticed.

And as Jack saluted (no goodbye kiss like last time) and refused the Doctor’s offer of companionship, he realised he had finally committed an unforgivable sin in the immortal’s eyes. He’d drawn a line between them forever.

And as Jack saluted (no goodbye kiss like last time)

This is very much what I saw happening in SOTD and LOTTL - Jack finally falls out of love when he sees how much the Doctor loves the Master, and how little he really thinks of Jack. I like to think the Doctor eventually regrets it; not sure if he'd get the clue.

I'm trying to believe it isn't true, but you're just too convincing!

Beautifully written, but very sad.

It would have been the most beautiful man-kiss ever. So beautiful the world might just die of glee. So maybe that's why it didn't happen.

Oh. I like this perspective - it turns the scenario on its head. Well done!

...Yeah. This is quite sad, but I think it's very true. Jack's nowhere near as infatuated with the Doctor as he used to be, and honestly that is a good thing for Jack, after everything the Doctor's done to him (both deliberately and not). Very nicely done.

Loved this.

That kinda broke my heart a little. I'm tempted to say poor Doctor, but he should really treat Jack better. Maybe he can win him over again with time, it's not like Jack's going anywhere.
