Winter Companions Doctor/Jack Gift Exchange

Welcome to the first Winter Companions Gift exchange!

This is an anonymous gift exchange, focusing on Captain Jack Harkness and the Doctor, in any part of their lives, any incarnations. Fic, art and vids, all ratings and genres are welcome.

The Dates

Sign-ups: 1st March - 7th March
Assignments out: 8th March
Deadline: 5th April
Posting: 6th April to 30th April
Reveals: 1st May

The Rules

All entries must pair the Doctor and Jack.

Stories must be at least 500 words long.
Fanart must consist of one larger piece or an icon set of at least 5 icons.
Vids (vidlets) must be at least 20 seconds long.
There are no upper limits.

This is an anonymous exchange, so please keep your assignments secret! Don't tell anyone other than your beta(s) who you're writing/creating for.

Like all wintercompanion challenges, prompts should be used as a point of inspiration, but since this is an exchange, you must incorporate at least one of your recipient's requests. You do not need to incorporate all three scenarios. Please respect your recipient's stated "do not wants". (Your mods will check all gifts before posting to make sure everything is in order.)

Fic must be beta-read.

Gifts must be submitted to the mods via email. We'll provide a template to use as a header when we send around the assignments, and detailed submission guidelines will be posted once things are under way.

If you run into trouble with the deadline, please let us know as soon as possible.

If you're not participating, you can still volunteer to pinch-hit. Pinch-hitters are loved beyond words!

Versions of the Doctor: Name any you'd be willing to write/create, or just say "any". "Any" covers all 11 incarnations of the Doctor as well as canonical other versions, like duplicate Ten and ganger Eleven, as well as potential future versions.)
Things you don't want to create: (For example, particular combinations such as Nine/Jack, or specific ratings/kinks/tropes.)

Sorry! But another question just popped into my head. Will there be a collection at AO3 for this exchange. So we can post our works there too after the reveals?

I would sort of like to participate, but... er...

Is it kosher to ask for/offer stories without Jack and the Doctor in a romantic r'ship- friendship or at least pre-slash stories? I know this is a Doctor/Jack comm. I sort of feel like I hang out here under false pretenses, because I love the two characters and their relationship so much but I just don't write them shippy. I wouldn't want to disappoint someone wanting to receive said fic.

You certainly haven't been here under false premises! We're generally very lax in what we count as a pairing, and pre-slash, or anything that can be interpreted as pre-slash, definitely counts. And of course the border between friendship and pre-slash is sort of in the eye of the beholder. :)

It'd be great if you could phrase your requests as broadly as possible. Pre-slash is absolutely fine to ask for, and you can add that you also like friendship fic. We'll do our best to match you up with someone who'll appreciate what you write!

How detailed should the prompts/scenarios be? Are we talking about three elements that we'd like to see worked into one story, or three completely separate story ideas to give our creator options to choose from?

Three separate prompts, please - giving your assigned gift-giver a few options to choose from is exactly the idea. :)

You can ask for specific elements to be included in a story, or for specific scenarios you'd like to see, or give other kinds of prompts as you prefer. But please keep in mind the minimum length - your requests should be something that can be done in that length. ;)

One more question: how do folks here generally go about finding beta-readers?

I think most of us just recruit them from our friends list. But maybe it'd be a good idea to put up a beta volunteer post!

I would like to give a gift. Your rules say to email gifts, but you don't include an email address to send it to in the post. Where do we send the email?

Any chance you might consider doing this again later in the year?

I have a friend who writes good Dr. Who stories, some with and some without Jack. I'm thinking about passing this along to her, but she's due to have shoulder and arm surgery at the end of this month, so she likely would not be able to meet this deadline.

I would love for her to get a gift fic to help keep her mind off of things, but I don't see how she could reciprocate on such a short notice.

I'm sorry your friend is in pain, and I hope the surgery goes well! But it's definitely better not to sign up for an exchange if you're not sure you can finish something for the deadline.

If this works out well, we'll probably have another gift exchange next year, though. :)
