joanne_c: Intellectual Curiosity (Jack/Nine) [PG-13] - SUMMER HOLIDAYS, PROMPT 3

Title: Intellectual Curiosity
Author: Joanne ([livejournal.com profile] joanne_c)
Pairing: Jack/Ninth Doctor
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers/warnings: None.
Summary: "Ufrif. The height of their intellectual superiority. Not like Time Lords, but a damn sight better than most civilisations," the Doctor answered.
Prompt: Ufrif; Year 3.33^958; Umbral Landing; bookbinders

"Where did you say?" Jack asked, frowning. They'd left Rose back on Earth with Jackie, not because they didn't want her along, but because the Doctor had declared it, and Jack had learned not to argue in the short time they'd been travelling together. Okay, so he also didn't mind being alone with the Doctor. He turned to the other man.

"Ufrif. The height of their intellectual superiority. Not like Time Lords, but a damn sight better than most civilisations," the Doctor answered. "Especially when we're going. The year Year 3.33^958. It was a fantastic time," he said, and adjusted a few controls.

"Just as long as there's nothing running after us wanting our hides," Jack said. "Like the last time we were at an intellectual paradise and they wanted our necks, if you remember.”

“I miscalculated,” the Doctor said. “I’ve made the right adjustments this time. We won’t end up two hundred years out of whack, because I’ve compensated.” He laughed. “Trust me, we’ll be at Umbral Landing before we know it.”

”Umbral Landing? That sounds familiar,” Jack said, thinking. He couldn’t remember why. “Should I pack anything?” he asked.

”Just yourself. I think you’ll like this place,” the Doctor said as the TARDIS landed. “We’re going to see the bookbinders. One of the cradles of intellectual harmony.”

Jack gave him a look. “Bookbinders? But surely…”

”Shhh,” the Doctor put a finger to Jack’s lips. “Trust me.”

That was all it took, of course, and Jack walked beside him, secretly pleased when the Doctor took his hand. He wasn’t a demonstrative man at the best of times and this was tantamount to a heated kiss in public with other people.

Jack let the Doctor lead him where he wanted to go, looking around at the people walking past them. Not quite human, their eyes were a golden colour and they had a few markings on their skin that if they were dropped into 20th century Earth could be seen as tattoos, but close enough for them to pass, so he relaxed even more, he was usually the one on alert, but he thought he could relax.

He did notice the couples kissing, and was pleased to note that there were several gender combinations, not to mention at least one group of three, but he didn’t get the chance to study things before they were in front of a huge building, and the Doctor was escorting him inside.

An hour later, Jack was pretty sure bookbinding was the same all the universe over, and he still didn’t understand why the Doctor was so all-fired enthusiastic about these particular ones. He did find some designs attractive, but there was only so much you could say about a book in a langue you couldn’t read, even one that was beautifully covered. He wondered if this was a living example of the old saying, but the Doctor was urging him into yet another room and Jack plastered a smile on his face, because even the most boring place in the universe was less boring if he was with the Doctor.

“This is the Translation Room,” the Doctor said. “So finally you’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about. Yes, I know you’ve been bored, but trust me, it’s worth it.”

Jack raised a disbelieving eyebrow, but followed the Doctor nevertheless. He’d never been one for reading much. Hadn’t hated it or anything, but it had never been one of his favourite pastimes. Well, unless it was erotica, but he doubted that a place as clearly intellectual as this would ever publish such things. He was used to finding that kind of thing in slightly less attractive surroundings, unless it was of the kind so old to be seen as a classic.

The Doctor was showing him some beautifully bound books, and Jack was glancing cursorily at them, pretending enthusiasm, until he let one fall open and…

Well. That was not what he had expected at all. He looked up at the Doctor, almost blushing – but not quite, and he caught a look in the blue eyes that he’d never seen before.

”Which one would you like to take back with us?” the Doctor asked.

Jack knew the answer already. “None. We don’t need books. Though if any,” he picked up one that had several illustrations of two men. “I can’t say these aren’t pleasing to the eye,” he said.

The Doctor chuckled. “Of course you pick the Ufrifian Karma Sutra – well, of course it’s not called that but it is certainly the equivalent.”

“I know what I like, and I wouldn’t mind that one,” Jack said, pointing to a rather athletic pose of two men.

”I was never that flexible, but if you get on top, maybe,” the Doctor said. “This one, I could handle,” he pointed to a less athletic looking pose.

”Or we could forget the book and you could pound me into the mattress,’ Jack replied.

“We’ll take it. There might be some ideas we can incorporate. But I think we’re done sightseeing,” the Doctor said.

“Only sight I care about is you naked,” Jack replied.

”I’ll take that as a compliment,” the Doctor said and they prepared to leave.

Aw, this is just so cute and so sweet! I loved Nine and Jack here, they were both so flirty together. Poor Jack was so bored, but I'll bet the Doctor knew all along what he was planning for them, and knew just how to get Jack going in all the right ways.

I giggled at the book Jack chose at the end there, that's so very him, and then teasing the Doctor about just seeing him naked. That was so adorable. You did a fantastic job with the prompts, and your characterizations of the two of them was so spot on. I really enjoyed your fic very much, it made me smile and feel very happy. Thanks again, and this is another one I've saved into my memories so I can enjoy it again.

This was wonderful. Loved how Jack didn't have a clue what the Doctor was planning. Then Jack picking their Karma Sutra! So Jack! I'd love to be a fly on the wall of their bedroom tonight.

Well done.

Ooh, I wondered what the Doctor was building up to! Fits the Nine/Jack flirtiness so well!

Oops! There seems to be a chapter or two missing--I'd love to see how they use that instruction manual! Although I would imagine Jack is a very quick study lol!
