Most programs, the best way to get through them is just to load pictures, and play with them, try all the functions on them. As long as you don't save any changes to the original, you can't harm it. There are also some very kind people on lj who post tutorials on stuff. I THINK clarity_lore had one on manips, and 04nbod has a couple of icon ones that I've seen, so just keep an eye open for people offering help this way.
