phinnia- golden cage (with catering) - jack/ten - pg-13

title: golden cage (with catering)
author: [livejournal.com profile] phinnia
challenge: goodbyes
pairing: jack/ten
rating: pg-13
summary: the doctor tries to say goodbye to jack (before EoT) but Jack is too quick for him.

"Pleasure Planet Eroticon Six!" the Doctor grinned, throwing his hands wide apart and flinging the TARDIS doors open to reveal perfect early summer weather.

Jack beamed back at him, a matching grin setting his face alight. "What do you want to do first? Beachfront nude bar? Latest in fusion cuisine? Private jacuzzi for two?"

"Oh, I don't know. You choose. You're the best at this sort of thing."

"Beachfront nude bar, I think." Jack mused.

"You go on ahead." The Doctor hugged Jack to his chest, clinging to him for a long moment. "I just need to ... lock up here. You know. Make sure everything's secured. Don't want anyone breaking into the TARDIS while we're off pleasure- planet-ing."

Jack nodded, caressing the Doctor's back gently in return before he set off.

The Doctor fiddled with the key in the lock and took a couple of slow steps, watching Jack's figure disappear down the path toward the beach.

"Goodbye, my Jack." he whispered, pulling his key back out of his pocket as Jack disappeared around the bend.

He knew what was coming - the Ood's message, the narrow escape on Mars, the prophecy he couldn't run away from no matter how hard he tried. The least he could do was protect Jack from having to die miserably and painfully to save his bacon time and time again - because he would, and the Doctor didn't deserve it - never had deserved it.

But when he opened the TARDIS door, it was to reveal Jack's smiling face and his feet up on the console.

"Not that this place isn't a million times better than an abandoned satellite," Jack drawled, clambering to his feet, "but if you keep leaving me places a guy's going to start thinking he's not wanted, you know?"

"Jack - "

"I know." Jack murmured, taking the Doctor's hands in his. "I know what's coming as much as you do, and I say it's my choice to stay or go, and I'm staying, unless you can honestly look me straight in the eye and say that you honestly want me to go."

"I want - " The Doctor trailed off and had to start again. "I want ... " It was impossible to avoid Jack's eyes, Jack's smile, Jack's charisma. "I want you. To stay."

Jack apparently had a whole store of gorgeous smiles, each one better than the last. How had he not noticed that before?

"I'll stay. And whatever's coming, we can face it together."

It was probably a line, and the Doctor knew it, and yet he still couldn't keep from smiling. This was the first time he had actually been able to smile, really smile, in weeks. Something about Jack's unyielding presence made things greatly reassuring, even the kind of things he was facing.

"But first-" the Captain's eyes were sparkling.

"Oh?"

"You promised me a beachfront nude bar, Doctor, and don't think I've forgotten it." This time the grin was positively salacious. "And I'm waiting for you this time. No more tricks. You're walking in front of me."

"You just want to walk behind me so you can stare at my bum. I know you."

"That's the other reason. I can have more than one perfectly good reason."

They were still joyfully squabbling as he locked up the TARDIS and headed hand in hand toward the nude beachfront bar.

I love this gorgeous little ficlet! And it made me tear up, but in a good way, because it was *so* Jack, and *so* Ten and the way it should have been. Thank you.

Wow! This was absolutely brilliant and beautiful and so wonderfully and well written! You did a magnificent job with the prompt!

Poor Ten, he was just so sad at having to leave Jack behind again, and going off to his fate, and I cried out happily when Jack surprised Ten by being inside the TARDIS when he opened the doors to leave. That was just fantastic! Jack will never abandon his Ten, not ever, because he loves him so much, and you really showed that so perfectly here. I was so happy when Ten admitted he wanted his Jack to stay with him, and they would face what was to come together, just as it should be. *huggles for Ten and Jack*

Thank you so much for this lovely fic, it really made my day so much better and made me so very happy. I've saved this to my memories, so I can enjoy it over and over. Thanks again. *grins*

This is great. Yay for Jack for being way ahead of the Doctor and not letting himself be left behind. :)

Lovely! Can't help feeling that if Jack had been there we'd still have Ten! And I usually don't like fixes.
