Summary: A job well done is one worth taking your time over.
The surf pounding onto the sand made a pleasant background noise to that of the music and laughter coming from the bar. Jack came through the entrance, clad in knee-length blue beach shorts and a white t-shirt, carrying a couple of drinks. He stepped on to the narrow wooden boardwalk leading to the beach, but stopped after a couple of strides to watch the man who was leaning back against the railing, staring up at the golden stars against a bottle-green night sky. His ivory shirt and loose-fitting black trousers almost seemed too big for his slim frame.
The man turned to see Jack who, caught out, laughed and resumed walking. Jack saw a lively pair of brown eyes and a smile that could have melted all the ice in the bar in one go.
“You took your time! What kept you?”
“Only the barmaid! Sorry. There you go.” Jack handed one of the glasses to his companion. “Galardine Fruit Punch, well chilled, as ordered.”
“Thanks. Cheers!” They clinked glasses and took sips of their drinks. “Mind how you go with this. It packs a wallop.”
“Duly noted.” Jack grinned.
“By the way, that was a beautiful con.” The grin faded.
“What the…..! Damn, I thought….”
“Relax. I won’t tell if you won’t tell. The rotten little sod deserved it. He’s been treating the hotel staff like shit ever since he arrived, and nearly got my colleague Selba sacked for a broken mirror, until it came out that he cracked it!”
“When he finds out that the firemoon gem I sold him is a fake, he’s gonna be after me. I need to be somewhere else, fast. Any ideas?”
Jack’s companion considered. “You’re not going to find a room anywhere else with the festival going on. The whole resort is booked up. You’ll have to high-tail it out.”
“I can’t. I’m meeting some friends tomorrow, and they expect me to be here.”
After a few more seconds, Jack’s companion said, “Look, I think I could help you out. There’s a spare room at my place. I mean…” he added hastily at Jack’s look, “it’s not huge or anything, but …”
“Don’t worry. It’ll be perfect. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” Conversation ceased as both men sipped their drinks, listening to the beat of the music from the bar and in the background the surf kept its natural time, measuring out the moments until,
“Go and get your stuff. I’ll wait at the reception for you.”
…………………………………
Jack’s bag was in the middle of the living room floor, and Jack’s companion was heading for the bathroom. “Your room is over there,” he said, pointing. “See you in a minute.”
“Okay, thanks!” Jacked walked over and pushed the door open, not at all surprised to see the double bed, and beginning to laugh softly. He turned as he heard his companion crossing the living room.
“That’s not the spare room, is it?”
“No.” There was that smile again. “ I lied!” Jack and his companion began to kiss.
……………………………………………….
“Woah!” The Doctor pulled back sharply, nearly rolling backwards off the pile of sacks. It took him several seconds to realise that Jack hadn’t moved at all. “What was that?”
“Good question, Doctor.” Jack opened his eyes, revealing his surprise. “I usually remember a guy with blond hair, blue eyes and large hands. What did you just do?”
“I didn’t do anything!” The Doctor sat up abruptly.
“You must have.” Jack was being remarkably matter-of-fact. He managed to pull himself upright, wincing slightly, and looked across at the Doctor. After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, he spoke again.
“A while ago, Tosh found an alien pendant. It enabled her to read everyone’s thoughts, except mine. Why would that be?”
The Doctor considered this, and then replied, “The changes made by the vortex energy closed your thoughts off. It was a side effect.”
“The vortex energy comes from the TARDIS, and you’re connected to that ship.”
The Doctor considered some more and then said, “It might not be the ship at all. It could just be
“Who?”
“You know her better as Madame Pompadour” The Doctor was lost in his own memories.
“Name dropper!” Jack was glad to see the Doctor relax a little, even as he said, “I’m serious, Jack! Oh, maybe it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other! Anyway….” He rose, and crossed to the broken window. “I’m going to get some fresh air. You settle down again.” He pulled the sack form the broken pane, letting the night air cool his burning face. It was cold, but there was no wind now. He began to feel calmer, until Jack said,
“You put yourself right into one of my memories, and it felt good, didn’t it?” The Doctor turned to look at Jack, who carried on, “You know, your predecessor didn’t object to a kiss.” The Doctor spluttered.
“It wasn’t that kind of a kiss! And anyway….Rose was looking!” Jack burst out laughing, and replied, “Excuses, excuses! What are you so afraid of, Doctor?”
“I’m not afraid of you, Jack Harkness!” The Doctor was caught between the feeling he now had for his friend, and a memory something Reinette said. “Every lonely boy must learn how to dance.” Was it all the same thing?
Jack wasn’t going to let him off the hook now. He settled himself back on the sacks, his hands behind his head, and said, “Prove it.”
“What?”
“You started it, Doctor. Will you let me finish it?” Jack watched the Doctor’s face as it registered several emotions from doubt through to acceptance. “He nodded.
“Yes. I will.”
“Okay then. Let’s try this.” Jack sat up again and began to unbutton his coat. “We need to get a little cosier. Take your coat off.” The Doctor nodded as he realised that Jack wanted to use their coats as covers. He took off his long coat, lay on his side of the sacks, and rested again on his right side, facing Jack who was again lying on his left side. They pulled the coats over themselves, overlapping them. Now they could feel the warmth of each other’s body. The Doctor couldn’t resist it, and said,
“You dancing?” Jack smiled at the old joke.
“Who’s asking?”
“I’m asking.”
“I’m dancing.” Jack gently reached up with his right hand, placing it on the back of the Doctor’s head. He pulled until their foreheads were touching, and then their eyes closed.
…………………………………….
The Doctor broke the kiss abruptly, leaving Jack confused until he said, “Forget the room, we can sleep there later! Let’s go outside. Come on, you’ll see!”
He pulled Jack through the back door, locked it behind them and indicated a path at the other end of the small back yard. “Through there.” They followed the path upwards through the trees, until they began to thin out among the rockier ground. Jack could hear the surf getting louder and followed the Doctor to the end of the path. As he turned left, he could see a small flat area of rock that sloped gently up to what Jack realised was the edge of a cliff. In the middle of it was an air mattress. They were surrounded by higher rocks. As he went to see how high they were, the Doctor said,
“I sleep up here, if it’s too hot inside the house. We’re on private land, and it’s sheltered. Great, isn’t it?”
“Damn right!” Jack was looking over the edge, watching the surf crashing against the rocks below. He turned to see the Doctor sitting on the mattress, and strode across, then knelt at his side.
“Where were we? Oh, yeah!” He gently cupped the Doctor’s face in his hands and leaned forward to place several brief kisses along his upper lip, before running the pad of his thumb along the lower, opening his mouth slightly. He then repeated the brief, feather-touch kisses before pressing his mouth firmly onto the Doctor’s, running the tip of his tongue just inside his lower lip. The Doctor responded by pulling Jack into his arms, opening his mouth to let Jack deepen the kiss, exploring the heat inside with slow strokes of his tongue.
The Doctor felt himself shivering first with pleasure, and then laughter, as he realised just how clever Jack was being. He was caressing the back of the Doctor’s neck, the stroking of his fingers in time with the movements of his tongue, and all to the steady rhythm of the surf below. The Doctor’s resistance gave way and Jack eased him back on to the mattress, kissing him on the forehead, eyelids and temples. He was running the tip of his tongue along the edge of the Doctor’s left ear, gently sucking on the lobe, and then licking down the now rapid pulse in his neck, before nuzzling against his throat and reversing the delicate trail up the other side, finishing with another deep kiss. Through it all he could hear the breaths that were now becoming soft moans. Then he broke the kiss and spoke.
“Unfasten your shirt…. No!” He pushed the Doctor’s head back up so they were looking into each other’s eyes. “Look at me while you do it!” The Doctor smiled.
“Okay. You asked for this!” The Doctor kept his eyes locked on Jack’s as he began to unbutton his shirt, each button coming undone to the rhythm of the surf. He grinned at Jack’s mock annoyance as the same, slow-burn teasing was turned back on him. As the Doctor reached his waist, he slowly untied the fastening at the top of his trousers, opening them a little to pull the shirt loose. The final button undone, he allowed Jack to push the shirt open, enjoying the feel of the tropical night air against his bare chest.
Then Jack’s fingers were moving across it, zeroing in on his nipples, circling and stroking them until the Doctor was breathing rapidly. Then Jack’s mouth was teasing where his fingers had been, sucking gently until he heard a longer moan of pleasure and the Doctor’s body arched underneath him.
His hands were now stroking the Doctor’s sides and belly as he slowly kissed his way downwards. He paused briefly to see the Doctor watching him, and wickedly ran his tongue around and into the navel, pushing rhythmically until he saw the Doctor’s head fall back with a gasp of delight.
The Doctor didn’t want to see anymore, only to feel. His eyes remained closed as he felt his trousers becoming looser, and the cloth sliding over his hips, thighs and calves. Jack’s hands were now stroking the front of his thighs, before moving to the more sensitive inner skin, and then slowly upwards. They found and began to caress the hard, darker flesh, and the Doctor’s hips rose and writhed as Jack began to stroke him, all thoughts of the surf gone now, setting the rhythm that would bring him to release.
He felt fingers touching his lips. “Open your mouth.” They slid in and stroked the inside of his mouth, emerging glistening with saliva. “Ready?”
“Yeah!”
The stroking hand was suddenly replaced by Jack’s mouth, his lips forming a hot seal, the tongue stroking wickedly around the head. The movements of the Doctor’s hips were now quickening as he began to lose control, his breaths becoming harsher. And then he felt the delicious penetration and the finding of the sweet spot inside, the stroking sending him over the edge. He cried Jack’s name as he exploded with pleasure…..
…. And then Jack was easing his mouth and hands back up his belly and chest, nuzzling at the skin that was now glowing in the moonlight. Jack felt the twin heartbeats beginning to slow down, and looked into the Doctor’s dazed brown eyes, before he gave him a final long deep kiss.
…………………………………..
The Doctor was now aware of the heat of his body, the musty warmth of the sacks beneath him, and the feel of Jack’s mouth on his. He responded to the kiss for a few more moments and then slowly pulled away, opening his eyes. Jack’s blue eyes regarded him steadily, smiling, and the Doctor had to roll onto his back, before finally giving in and laughing.
“Well!” he finally managed to say. “Did that match up to your usual memory?”
“From now on, that is my memory.”
“You know Jack, I’m surprised we’re both still dressed!”
“So am I, although you might want to check for any stains.”
“What?” The Doctor sat up abruptly, shoving the coats back. Jack burst out laughing and said, “Kidding, Doctor! That was a joke!” and received a thump on his left thigh in response.
The Doctor rose from the sacks and again crossed to the window. He saw that the cloud was higher, and beginning to break up. A few stars were glinting and eventually the moonlight would break through. He heard Jack sitting up and turned to watch him get slowly to his feet. “Careful!”
“I’m okay!” Jack cautiously tested his ankle by crossing to join the Doctor at the window. “It’s a little sore and stiff, but I think I can walk on it now.”
“We’ll give it another fifteen minutes, and then head for the TARDIS.”
“How long will you stick around?”
“I’m going to let the TARDIS refuel for 24 hours.”
“What about Martha?”
“Tell her how long I’ll be here and where the TARDIS is. After that it’s her decision.”
“Will do……. Um, Doctor,” Jack hesitated. “Now that we’ve, er…”
“Come to an understanding?” The Doctor kept his face straight while Jack snorted with laughter.
“I was just thinking, the next time you make a pit stop in Cardiff…… would you care to do it for real?”
