"Yes? Yes, your Majesty. No, I promise to behave," Jack said into the phone. There was a long pause, then he sighed heavily. "Fine, I won't wear period military. Yes, I know you're sick of me wearing it. I'll find something else. Yes, non-military historical dress. Yes, ma'am, see you tomorrow." Jack hung up the phone and shot Ianto a weary look.

"I assume that was the Queen?"

"Yes. She needs protection during the Royal Masquerade Ball tomorrow evening."

"I see. And I assume by your end of the conversation you will need something other than your old Royal Air Force uniform to wear?" Ianto asked, trying to hide his smile.

"Yes, can you believe it? She said I've worn it too many times, and she wanted to see me in something different. But still historical." Jack leaned back in his chair and put his feet up on the corner of his desk. "Any ideas?"

Ianto pulled up a second chair and sat down, pondering. "I have one idea, though it would depend on if you are performing this protection duty alone or with help."

"You think I'd go to a fancy dress ball without you? What's your idea?"

"I wear your uniform, and you dress up as my lady escort," Ianto said with a grin.

"Your lady escort?"

"You asked for ideas."

Jack leaned farther back, nearly tipping the chair over, and was silent for a long while. Finally he pushed away from the desk and stood. "Let's go see what we have in the archives!"

Ianto stood, rolling his eyes. "The Torchwood archives are not your own personal fancy dress wardrobe, sir!"

"Not those, I mean my personal archives!" Jack said, climbing down the ladder toward his small quarters.

The Doctor jumped as the old-fashioned phone built into the TARDIS' main console rang. He ran around to the other side of the console and picked it up.

"Hello? Ah yes, Your Majesty, it's wonderful to hear from you! How are you? Mmmhmmm....I see. Certainly, I'd be happy to come to your Masquerade Ball. No, I don't mind helping provide protection for your Highness, it's no trouble at all. Historical dress you say? Oh, historical characters preferred. I see...I think I can manage something. You're very welcome, I will see you soon!" He hung up the phone and sank into the nearby couch. "Historical character...hmmm..."

Jumping up, the Doctor set the coordinates for Earth and the specific date, sending the TARDIS flying through the vortex, then he ran out of the control room to look through the vast wardrobe he kept for something to wear.

Ianto pulled the Torchwood SUV up to the palace, kitted out in Jack's Royal Air Force uniform, complete with great coat. A man in a 1920s-era tuxedo approached the car and tapped on the window.

"Your invitation, Captain?" he asked, addressing Ianto.

"Torchwood, here on the Queen's request," Ianto said.

"Ah, yes, please pull around to the side entrance," the man said, waving them on and walking up to the next vehicle.

Ianto pulled the SUV around and parked by a few other cars in a tiny side lot. They stepped out of the vehicle and walked over to the entrance, which was guarded by a man in an old-fashioned Royal guard uniform.

"Captain, Miss?" the guard said, eyeing Jack's knee-length powder blue a-line dress, four-inch stiletto heels and long wavy brunette wig.

"Yes, we're here from Torchwood," Ianto said.

The guard nodded. "Ah yes, we have been expecting you," he said. He led them inside and toward the Queen's sitting room.

Inside, the Queen was sitting in front of a small table laid out with tea service for four, wearing a dress that looked like that of Queen Elisabeth I.

"Torchwood to see you, Mum," the guard announced.

"Please, do let them in," the Queen said. The guard stepped aside so Jack and Ianto could enter the room. "Thank you guardsman, you may return to the doors."

"Yes Mum," the guard said, and left, closing the door behind him.

"Welcome, Captain Harkness," the Queen said. "You look lovely today. And this is your associate?"

"Yes, Mum, this is Ianto Jones, he is a member of my team," Jack replied. "And might I say you look spectacular today, Your Highness."

"Thank you Captain. Please, do have a seat. Our other guest will be back shortly."

Jack and Ianto sat in the two chairs directly across the table from where the Queen sat. A moment later, another door to the room opened and a slender man in fancy velvet clothes entered. Jack looked up and his jaw dropped.

"Doctor? What are you doing here?"

"Jack, pleasure to see you, you're looking lovely tonight. I'm here to provide protection for the Queen at the Ball tonight," the Doctor replied, sitting beside the Queen.

"You too?" Jack asked, confused.

"I asked the Doctor here as well, the more protection the better," the Queen replied. "Before we go out there though, shall we have our tea?"

Jack frowned. "Might I ask why? Are you concerned about something specific, or did you just want to be surrounded by good-looking protectors?"

"Hardly, Captain," the Queen scoffed. "I am trying to keep things quiet but there have been threats, and my staff is concerned about the possibility of an otherworldly source."

"When you say otherworldly?" the Doctor queried.

"It appears that some of my staff have been impersonated. No one very close to me, as of yet, but a cook and a carriage driver have been seen in two places at once. So certain members of my staff feel there is a shape shifter in our midst and insisted I bring in expert protection," the Queen explained.

Jack and the Doctor exchanged looks. Ianto reached into an inner pocket and pulled out his PDA, staring at it intently.

"We will get to the bottom of this, Mum, don't you worry," Jack promised.

An hour later Jack was regretting his promise. The three of them had been shadowing the Queen closely to no avail. Finally he had whispered to Ianto that he should remain with the Queen and the pulled the Doctor aside.

"So... Casanova, huh?"

The Doctor grinned. "I thought it appropriate. World War II dress to coordinate with your friend?"

"Ianto's idea, since the Queen specifically requested I not wear my old uniform," Jack said.

"I see," the Doctor said. "You look lovely, Jack, that dress suits you quite well."

"Really? You think so? I thought I'd look better out of it," Jack said with a wink.

"You never change, Jack," the Doctor sighed. "Where did you learn to walk in heels like that?"

"Oh, I learned from a lovely young lady I knew named Claire, she told me she learned how from her uncle."

"Ah, how very La Cage," the Doctor replied.

Jack shot him the full Harkness grin and grabbed the Doctor's wrist, pulling him off toward a quiet hallway.

Ianto followed the Queen across the ballroom, quietly enjoying the fact that everyone addressed him as 'Captain' as people came to greet Her Highness. He wondered where Jack and the Doctor had gotten off to, though he had an idea, knowing Jack. He smiled at an older lady who was gushing about how handsome he looked in uniform. The lady moved on toward the buffet table, and Ianto spotted Jack across the room.

"What is Captain Harkness doing over there?" the Queen asked quietly.

Ianto raised an eyebrow as he and the Queen watched Jack wandering the length of the buffet table, filling a plate. "I am not sure, actually," he replied.

"I believe we should make our way toward the banquet table, my dear Captain Jones," the Queen replied. "I feel a bit peckish."

Ianto grinned and led the Queen toward Jack. They slowly wove their way through the crowd, and Ianto noticed that Jack did not seem to notice him at all. They reached Jack and Ianto was about to say something when he stopped, his jaw hanging open.

"What is it?" the Queen asked softly.

"I don't think that's Jack," Ianto said. "He doesn't smell like Jack...I think that's your shape shifter, Mum."

"I think you look too warm in all that velvet, Doctor," Jack said. "Let me help you out of that."

The Doctor rolled his eyes. "Jack, we're supposed to be working."

Jack pulled the Doctor's jacket off and as he laid it down on the chaise lounge, the Doctor's glasses slipped out. Jack snatched them up and put them on. "Do I look smarter now?" he joked.

"No, but you do look sexy," the Doctor replied.

The Doctor was just starting to unbutton Jack's dress when they heard gunfire coming from the main ballroom.

"Duty calls," Jack sighed, handing the Doctor his glasses and darting out of the room.

In the main ballroom, Ianto was standing in front of the Queen, with his gun out, in a stand-off against the fake Jack. He didn't quite know where the shape shifter had produced the gun from, since it was wearing Jack's costume and there didn't seem to be any pockets in the dress, but before he could react the shape shifter had aimed a beefy handgun his way and fired several warning shots.

The shape shifter's attention turned toward the other end of the room as Jack and the Doctor ran in. Jack spotted Ianto and dug his Webley out of a hidden pocket he'd sewn into the dress. The Doctor shot him an exasperated glare and pulled out his sonic screwdriver. He followed Jack across the room toward the stand-off.

The Doctor grabbed the Queen's arm and pulled her away from the line of fire as Jack came to stand next to Ianto. The shape shifter looked at Jack, confused.

"I look better in that dress," the shape shifter declared a moment later.

"No, you don't. Oh, and, you missed a spot," Jack retorted. When the shape shifter was distracted, looking down to see what Jack was talking about, he fired a shot into the shape shifter's head. The creature exploded into a mountain of gelatinous pink goo, coating Jack and Ianto as well as most of the dance floor.

"Nice handiwork," Ianto said, shaking goo off of his gun and sliding it into an inner pocket. "Where were you?"

The Doctor returned before Jack could reply, shaking his head at the sight of goo all over the place. "You had to shoot it. What did it do to you?"

"Threatened the Queen, that's what," Jack replied. "So, Doctor, care to resume what this creature so rudely interrupted?"

Ianto looked from Jack to the Doctor and back. "I think you need to include me in the fun, Sir."

Jack grinned. "Sounds like a plan!"
