Sonata

Jack sat in the depressingly cheerful coffee bar in the tourist sector of Europa, staring down into the dark depths of the coffee to avoid looking at the faux ‘classic Earth’ décor.

Coffee bars, much like the Disney brand, had spread from Earth like a plague once humans had discovered interstellar travel, but as far as he was concerned, he was still 12 centuries linear, or 100 years personal time from the last truly good cup of coffee he had ever had.

He looked up in surprise as the background music being piped through the speakers cut out when someone ran their fingers over the keys of the piano in in the alcove across the room, he had assumed it was a prop.

The man who sat there was young, with spikey dirty blond hair and blue eyes with pale, freckled skin and Jack automatically pegged him as pure human, not something you saw out here much anymore; even more startling was the tune he started to play once he had tested out the range of the instrument, Moonlight Sonata had been old even before Jack fled Earth.

Suspicious, Jack cast his eyes around the rest of the room, there was no-one who stood out as Time Lord or even Time Agent, but if that young man wasn’t a time traveller Jack would eat his great coat. Rising, Jack picked up his coffee cup and moved over to the table directly adjacent to the piano, waiting until the young man had finished the piece before moving to lean on the piano.

“Hi, haven’t heard that in a while,” he opened with a mildly flirtatious grin, one of his ‘not serious flirting’ repertoire.

“Jaaack.”

The voice from behind him as the young pianist looked at him wide eyes was less unexpected than he thought it should have been, the single syllable drawn out in a familiar blend of fond exasperation, amusement and a whole boatload of ‘stop it’.

“Doctor,” Jack acknowledged, turning to lean back against the piano while he studied the familiar features of the Doctor he had known best, he had met the two incarnations who followed from time to time but they hadn’t held his interest the same way.

“Thought he might be one of yours, but I couldn’t see you around,” he said, jerking his head in the direction of the blond youth.

“Yes, well he said he was coming in for a cup of coffee while I haggled for some parts, he didn’t say he was going to attract attention.”

“I didn’t know anyone would recognize the tune,” the pianist protested defensively.

“First rule of traveling with the Doctor kid, if something can get you in trouble, it generally will,” Jack pointed out with a genuine laugh.

The Doctor pouted but didn’t bother to protest it, settling instead for gesturing to the young man on the piano bench.

“Jack, this is Evan Blake; Evan, this is the thoroughly incorrigible Captain Jack Harkness.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Evan said warily, blushing as Jack shot him a dazzling grin.

“Jack,” the Doctor sighed in exasperation, he could tell Jack wasn’t really flirting, he had his pheromones locked down too tightly, but Evan was young and impressionable.

“So, you here for long Doctor?” Jack asked, wondering if there was something going on that he should stick around for. He didn’t recall any significant events listed on Europa for this timeframe, but that didn’t guarantee anything.

“Nope, just stopped off for parts and supplies. What about you?”

“Passing through, arrived from Celonet yesterday and now I’m just waiting on a transport for somewhere that looks interesting; not as if I’m in a hurry,” he shrugged.

The Doctor nodded, looking at the immortal for a long moment. He had missed the man and he suspected the TARDIS picking this time and place to stop was no accident, she was keenly aware of Jack’s location pretty much all the time.

“I have transport, and you have to admit that it’s always interesting,” he offered slowly.

Jack cocked his head to the side, holding his eyes.

“You sure?” he finally asked.

“Yep, you can buy me a drink and we can talk.”

Jack’s breath caught, remembering that long ago throwaway comment.

“You really want me to buy you a drink?” he asked hesitantly, wondering if the Time Lord was on the same page, or if he had forgotten that conversation and had meant it innocently.

With a faint smile the Doctor stepped into Jack’s personal space, holding his eyes as he leaned in to steal a kiss.

“I think we’re both old enough to dance without stepping on each other’s toes.”

“God yes,” Jack breathed, leaning in to return the kiss.

The Doctor looked over Jack’s shoulder at Evan, who was watching them curiously.

“Come on, time to go,” he said cheerfully, leading the way out of the coffee bar with one hand still wrapped around Jack’s wrist, he had everything he needed here.

Smiling faintly, Jack allowed himself to be towed along; he doubted it would be that easy, and he suspected there would be some ruffled feathers and insecurities to be smoothed out with young Evan once the kid got over his confusion, but damned if he didn’t care, he was going home at long last.
