"You're going to leave," the Doctor's quiet words rang out.

Propped against the outer wall of the TARDIS and with the swirling of stars wheeling overhead, Jack reached out to take the Doctor's hand. The convulsive way the Doctor gripped it belied his distant expression and the fact he hadn't even looked at him yet.

"Everyone leaves," the Doctor said even more quietly before Jack could answer. His grip on Jack's hand tightened in a silent plea he couldn't vocalize.

 "I won't. Not forever."

This, at least, was a promise Jack could make. Probably the only person who could.

The Doctor looked at him. Jack could see the grief and loneliness in them, still so sharply fresh after the Year.

"All right," the Doctor smiled a little, a wavering flicker that quickly disappeared.

Jack smiled back sadly and squeezed the Doctor's hand. He reached up and pressed a gentle kiss to the Doctor's lips, hoping to ease the wary uncertainty in the Doctor's eyes.

The Doctor pressed back, a little desperately. It was a long moment until they separated.

The Doctor smiled again, his eyes shining.

They settled against the TARDIS and watched the stars, hands still firmly clasped.
