Fic: Time and Eternity
Title: Time and Eternity
Author:
dippy_hippy
Prompt used: Time and Eternity
Rating: All ages
Spoilers/warnings: Chosen from the spoiler prompt list, although nothing really spoilerish
Summary: Three connected drabble-ish pieces about the Doctor and Jack
Time and Eternity
Augustine of Hippo wrote that time exists only within the created universe, so that God exists outside of time; for God there is no past or future, but only an eternal present.
One need not believe in God in order to hold this concept of eternity: for example, an atheist mathematician can maintain the philosophical tenet that numbers and the relationships among them exist outside of time, and so are in that sense eternal.
***
Jack has a past and a future, but they are one of the same thing. He has an eternal present.
He is not God though.
He cannot save everyone, though he may try.
He can’t jump in space and time, confined to the long road.
He’s lived time and time again, he’s made decisions no ‘human’ should have to make.
He carries with him the responsibility he never thought he was capable of.
***
The Doctor has a past and a future, he has a present. They are so closely interconnected that it is impossible to see them apart.
He is a God of sorts, one of time.
The Last of the Time Lords.
He has to make the decisions that mean life or death.
He carries this with him through all of time and space.
He has the weight of the world with him always.
***
Sometimes it’s nice to share.
The burden of time split two ways; a problem shared is a problem halved.
They are both anomalies in their own rights, both survivors.
Jack’s not the responsible one, The Doctor doesn’t have to take it all on his own.
They are connected so completely they don’t always know how they’ll part.
But they’re connected through time and space, forever and for always.
Eternally.
